Chery Hybrid vs Super Hybrid vs Electric: Which Suits You?

Chery sells three kinds of electrified cars. They sound alike but work quite differently. Here's a plain-English guide from Chery Footscray.

Hybrid (no plug)

The Tiggo 4 Hybrid pairs a petrol engine with an electric motor and a small battery that charges itself while you drive and brake. You never plug it in. It suits drivers who do lots of stop-start city driving and can't charge at home.

Super Hybrid (plug-in hybrid)

Super Hybrid is Chery's name for its plug-in hybrids: the Tiggo 7 Super Hybrid, Tiggo 8 Super Hybrid and Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid. They have a bigger battery you charge from a power point or wall charger. When it's charged you can drive on electricity for many daily trips, and the petrol engine takes over for longer drives, so there's no range worry. It suits families who can charge at home but still do weekend trips or country drives.

Fully electric

The Chery E5 runs on battery power only. It has the lowest running costs and no fuel at all, but you need somewhere to charge, ideally at home or work, plus public fast chargers for long trips.

Every Chery hybrid, Super Hybrid and electric model has an 8-year, unlimited kilometre warranty on its high-voltage battery.

Do I have to plug in a Chery Super Hybrid?

No, it will still drive like a hybrid, but you get the biggest fuel savings by charging it regularly.

Can I charge at home?

Yes. A normal power point works for overnight top-ups, and a wall charger installed by a licensed electrician is faster.

Which is cheapest to run?

Generally the fully electric E5 if you charge at home, then a Super Hybrid that you charge often, then a hybrid. It depends on how and where you drive.
